Reclaimed oak is often associated with interior wall linings, beams and flooring, but it can also be used to bring natural texture and aged character to selected exterior architectural features.

From rainscreen cladding and entry walls to gables, garage door facings and architectural screens, reclaimed oak provides an established appearance often associated with traditional barn wood cladding, while remaining suitable for contemporary architectural projects.

Interior and Exterior Applications

Reclaimed oak can be used both inside and out, but the way it is detailed and the way it ages will be different.

For interior applications, the timber is protected from the weather, allowing more of its original colour, texture and patina to remain unchanged.

For exterior applications, the boards are selected and installed with exposure and natural weathering in mind. Over time, the surface will gradually soften and weather towards a silver-grey finish, adding another layer of character to the timber.

Rain-Screen Cladding

In a rain-screen application, the boards are installed as an exterior façade, with the primary weather-proofing positioned behind the timber.

The reclaimed oak adds depth, texture and natural variation across the exterior, giving the building a distinctive and established appearance.

It can be used across larger elevations or as a feature material alongside stone, concrete, steel, plaster or other timber cladding.

As reclaimed boards naturally vary in width, texture and tone, the finished result has a more layered and individual character than conventional uniform cladding.

Reclaimed oak cladding is sometimes described as barn wood cladding because of its aged surfaces, weathered tones and historic markings. At Old Oak Collection, the boards are genuine reclaimed European oak selected for their natural character and architectural quality.

Gables and Entry Walls

Reclaimed oak can be used to define gables, entrance walls and other prominent architectural areas.

These applications allow the timber to become a strong visual feature without covering the entire building. The aged surface introduces warmth and texture, while the natural variation between boards prevents the finished area from appearing overly uniform.

Used around an entry, reclaimed oak can help establish a sense of material quality and character before entering the home.

Garage Door Facings

Garage doors often occupy a significant part of a building’s exterior elevation.

Facing the door with reclaimed oak can reduce its visual dominance and help integrate it with the wider architectural design.

The boards can be selected and arranged to complement adjacent cladding, entry detailing or other oak features used throughout the project.

Natural Weathering

Reclaimed oak already carries the marks of age, use and exposure, but its appearance will continue to change outdoors.

Sunlight and rain will gradually soften the colour and move the surface towards a natural silver-grey. Areas with greater exposure may weather more quickly, while protected areas can retain warmer brown tones for longer.

This variation is a normal part of using natural timber externally and contributes to the developing character of the building.

Where a more consistent original colour is preferred, a suitable exterior coating system may be considered. Any coating will require ongoing maintenance and should be selected with advice from the coating supplier and project professional.

Design and Installation Considerations

Reclaimed oak used externally should form part of a properly designed building system.

Fixing methods, ventilation, drainage, moisture management and the supporting wall construction should be considered before installation.

Exterior timber detailing should be developed by the project architect, designer, builder or other suitably qualified professional to suit the building, location and level of exposure.

The timber should not be relied upon as the primary water-proofing layer unless it forms part of a specifically designed and approved cladding buildup.

Timber with an Established Appearance

One of the main reasons reclaimed oak works so well externally is that it does not need to appear newly installed.

Its aged surface, irregular texture and natural variation give a building an immediate sense of permanence. Rather than waiting for conventional timber to develop character, reclaimed oak introduces depth and history from the beginning.

As the boards continue to weather, the material becomes increasingly connected to the building and its surroundings.
